A Scrumptious Feast
A couple months ago I hosted an autumn party at my crib. The plan? Eat corn bread, chili, and hot cider while watching the best movie of all time: Fantastic Mr. Fox. I spent a week prepping the event, getting the ingredients, making sure I’d have enough food for a hungry crowd, and sending out invitations.
At 7pm people showed up. And they kept showing up. We had at least 20 people there, and all hungry. This is where things get problematic.
My Bad Habit
I have a really bad habit when I cook. Basically I get so caught up in the recipe that I forget to taste the food before I serve it.
So after everybody got their chili, I made myself a bowl. I heaped it with cheese and sour cream, and I sat down to taste.
I tasted it… and I frowned. I scrambled for the salt. It just wasn’t as tasty as I thought it would be.
But now I smile. Because we can learn something great from my blunder.
A Good Cook Does This
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8)
A good cook knows what good food tastes like. And if we want to serve the real Jesus to others, I think we should taste as we go. Otherwise we’ll end up frowning, wondering why we were so stoked to share a meal we don’t even like.
God doesn’t want ministry. He wants hearts. He wants to be close to you. And he wants to fill your mouth with good, good things.
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.” Psalm 81:10
Eat Your Desert!
Do these scriptures sound like your walk with God? Do we enjoy him? Do we take delight in him? Do we dream about him the way we dream about grandma’s pumpkin pie? I hope we do. Because he’s really in the business of satisfying his people.
My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. (Psalm 63:5-8)
What a great God.
P.S., come over soon, I will make you banana bread.
